Julian Heynen


is a curator and writer specialising in contemporary art since ca. 1960. He has worked with and wrote about artists such as: Bruce Nauman, Thomas Schütte, Katharina Fritsch, Lawrence Weiner, Franz West, Andreas Gursky, Juan Muñoz, Richard Deacon, Thomas Struth, Zvi Goldstein, Miroslaw Balka, Luc Tuymans, René Daniels, Gregor Schneider, Rosemarie Trockel, Stan Douglas, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Gerhard Richter, Thomas Ruff, Rodney Graham, Candida Höfer, Martin Kippenberger, Thomas Scheibitz, Tino Sehgal, Jeroen de Rijke / Willem de Rooij, Ayse Erkmen, Simon Starling, Wilhelm Sasnal, Roman Ondák, Vajiko Chachkhiani, and many others.

Julian Heynen studied art history and literature, 1977 phD on the writings of Barnett Newman. Director of exhibitions Museum Haus Lange, Museum Haus Esters, Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Krefeld, from 2001 artistic director of K21 Kunstsammlung NRW, Düsseldorf, artistic director at large of Kunstsammlung NRW from 2009 until 2016. 2003 and 2005 commissioner German Pavilion, Biennale die Venezia, 2008 co-curator Shanghai Biennale, 2017 curator Georgian Pavilion, Biennale di Venezia. 2007-2010 participant in TV program Bilderstreit (3Sat). Lives in Berlin
